From the mail room of a talent agency (while studying for his masters degree in painting), to the sales floor at Neiman Marcus (as he worked to create his niche in the art world), to flipping houses across California (because he loved it!) – Douglas has always brought his strong sense of style and love of beauty to whatever project he takes on. These are a few of his favorites.
Where do you live and why do you love it?
I live in the Montclair section of the Oakland Hills. I love this area because it has great access to San Francisco, Berkeley, Marin, and places like Walnut Creek. There is tremendous diversity and the city of Oakland is progressive and booming.
Best coffee/barista?
Without ANY hesitation, the best coffee and BEST barista(o)s are found at Highwire at Market Hall. The coffee is roasted in Emeryville so it’s local and the people watching is always amazing.
Best food in the hood?
I’m going to push my “hood” border just a tad (by way of the crow flying)and say Chez Panisse Cafe. The food is extraordinary, any dish with mushrooms is life changing, and the place is always full of the most colorful cast of people.
Favorite spot for a date?
THE new “hot spot” for dating in my opinion is the newly remodeled lobby/bar at the Claremont Hotel. Excellent service, amazing views of San Francisco, and totally discreet!
Where do you find your go-to hostess gift?
Whether it’s French triple milled soap, beautiful aroma therapy candles, fantastic ceramic pieces, even superb baby clothes and stuffed animals, Ellington and French is THE place.
Best kept neighborhood secret?
After all the great coffee, amazing food, terrific shopping, and eye popping people watching the city of Oakland has to offer, I LOVE the quiet and serenity walking at Mountainview Cemetary. The views are beautiful, the tombs are really architectural marvels, and you can hear the birds sing!
