Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Jason grew up in the family rug business that he now co-owns with his sister Andrea — they’ve come a long way from climbing over stacks of rugs as children to emerge as two of the industry’s most respected buyers. Moattar, Ltd. has been in business for almost 53 years, known for its exquisite collections of hand-knotted rugs, and had the distinction of selling their rugs to The White House in 2008…oh, the stories those rugs could tell! Jason has had a seat on the SCAD advisory board for five years, and recently celebrated a six year anniversary with his partner.
Where do you live and why do you love it?
I live in Atlanta, GA and have seen this city change over the years! There are many many things I love about Atlanta — which is why I have been here so long. Its not a Southern misconception that the people are nicer down South, it’s a truth. Atlanta is a very green city, which is just beautiful to witness on a daily basis, and there is so much to explore and experience… from amazing restaurants and bars to outdoor activities.
I hit up the Starbucks on a daily basis, but I also love Dancing Goats Coffee in Ponce City Market and Octane Coffee in West Midtown.
Best food in the hood?
I love General Muir’s Kitchen (high end Jewish deli) in Emory Village, Cape Dutch (South African cuisine) in Buckhead, and Kale Me Crazy (for everyday after the gym bites!)
Favorite spot for a cocktail?
For a quick drink before dinner, I highly recommend Holman and Finch in Buckhead and The Optimist in West Midtown.
Where do you find your go-to hostess gift?
I adore BD Jeffries in Buckhead, Bungalow in West Midtown, and I always appreciate our signature candles as gifts…..so Moattar, Ltd. as well!!
Best kept neighborhood secret?
Atlanta has many great neighborhoods, so of course there are many great neighborhood secrets! The Treehouse Pub in Buckhead has wonderful salads and burgers and a very relaxed environment, and Endive is a fantastic place to sit at the bar and enjoy dinner (plus they are only open a few days out of the week!).
