Entertainment and pop culture authority Micah Jesse shares his lifestyle and celebrity expertise on television (appearing on FOX, CNN, CBS, and VH1 shows), and as a successful entertainment journalist, blogger, and on-air host. With his finger on the pulse of, well, everything…we asked him to share the buzziest spots in his NYC neighborhood.
Where do you live and why do you love it?
My partner and I live in West Harlem, between Central Park and Morningside Park. Both parks are so beautiful and a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. We love the diversity of the neighborhood, especially the booming restaurant scene.
At home or on the go, it’s either Cafe Bustelo or Dunkin Donuts. However, the best coffee in NYC would have to be at Porto Rico Importing Company downtown. They have two locations, both with barrels of beans, making for an aromatic experience unlike any other.
Best food in the hood?
Some of our neighborhood favorites are Lido Harlem, Marcus Samuelsson’s Streetbird, and LoLo’s Seafood Shack.
Favorite spot for a cocktail?
We love any bar with a rooftop view, but right now we are particularly loving the roof at Hotel Hugo in Soho. When the weather is perfect in New York, it doesn’t get much better.
Where do you find your go-to hostess gift?
Jonathan Adler makes for great hostess gifts. They have everything from picture frames to salt and pepper shakers — in all price ranges.
Best kept neighborhood secret?
The best kept neighborhood secret is the fish market on 116th and Malcolm X Boulevard, where you choose from a large selection of seafood (fresh fish, clams, shrimp, etc.) and they will season and steam it for you. And it’s super cheap! (Great to bring home for a dinner party and pretend you made it yourself. Oops. That’s a secret, too.)
