Paul Coates is a bitter (he’d say astute) old gay guy (he’d say homo) who lives in the Hollywood Hills right behind Harry Potter World (just don’t) with his incredibly patient, understanding and handsome husband. Paul used to do a lot (write, produce, manage movie stars) but lately he spends his time writing, cooking, racing up to his little chalet in Lake Arrowhead (yes, two homes) and shopping OBSESSIVELY on Previously Owned By A Gay Man.
Where do you live and why do you love it?
Hollywood Manor, part of Hollywood Knolls.
They just opened GC Marketplace – and I am there ALL THE TIME – great little place for take out, dining in – great coffee bar and wine bar!!! Gary Arabian is a wonderful chef, it’s his place.
Favorite spot for a cocktail?
Around my campfire – on Velma Creek – We had the brilliant Steve Sandalis from Mystic Water Gardens install a waterfall, koi pond and campfire (gas, shhhh) – surrounded by pine trees, California Incense Cedars, comfy furniture – we have people over ALL THE TIME for cocktails at “Velma Creek”. Yes, that’s an invitation!
Date night destination?
iPic Theaters in Pasadena, about 15 minute drive from here. Rick and I go there for drinks, dinner and a film – it’s like a first class international flight – in a movie theater!
Favorite find in the neighborhood?
GALA THAI – its on my corner and is consistently good! Great thai food, we can walk down and pick it up, and because I manage lit and talent clients from home, it’s become my work cafeteria!
Outdoor space to enjoy in the sun?
Stay out of the sun, silly!
Best kept neighborhood secret?
Our house is up against the backlot of Universal Studios – so it’s really fun to walk up the hill, and look down at Norman Bates’ house from Psycho, a bombed 747 and the Under Construction of Harry Potter World – also GREAT AND FREE fireworks from Universal on the 4th of July and New Years Eve!
