What neighborhood do you live in and why do you love it?
I live between Southampton and the West Village of Manhattan. After building my own home, I tried to make a go of it full time in the Hamptons – my house is on the water and watching the change of seasons and the migration of birds on the pond is incredibly relaxing and meditative. It’s doable about nine months of the year, but come Janurary it’s pretty bleak….and after a full time winter season in Southampton I realized I needed to have a touchstone in NYC. I found a great pied-à-terre I call the “Birdhouse” – the top floor of small West Village building with tree top views and a quiet courtyard. Best of both worlds!
Favorite coffee spot/barista?
I’m not a big coffee drinker but I do like an occasional iced coffee when the weather is warm…..Birch Coffee around the corner from me in the West Village has a great following!
Favorite spot for a cocktail?
I love the corner bar at Rosso Pomodoro in my neighborhood. It sits on a triangular corner and has windows front and back. Sitting there during a snow storm, sipping a Manhattan, is one of my favorite NYC memories. But if I want a bit more fancy, the Top of the Standard is the most beautiful room in NYC for cocktails! There is an old school elegance about the room that doesn’t exist so much any longer in NYC. The views of the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty, and the sunsets are just spectacular. I like to get a bit dressed up and take out-of-town guests there for a true New York experience.
Date night destination?
Fedora restaurant at the bar is the best! Cozy, and the food is amazing! They know my favorite spot: last two seats at the bar closest to the wall. It’s a huge U-shaped mahogany bar, the music is always great, the staff is super knowledgeable and takes great pride in the food they serve. Gabriel Stulman the CEO & Founder of Happy Cooking Hospitality – along with Matt Griffin the executive chef and partner – has created some of the most unique, delicious and sustainable restaurants in the West Village.
Favorite find in the neighborhood?
There is so much to discover in my Manhattan neighborhood – and so much changing so often – with the fast pace of NYC. But a recent find (since I’m a big foodie) is Dell’Anima…I know I’m late to the party on this one because it’s been around for a number of years. I love the small open kitchen vibe, the food is amazing, and you can actually have a conversation with your table mates…not to mention the ones sitting next to you!! The intimacy and attention to detail are so refreshing.
Where do you find your favorite go-to hostess gift?
Best place for gifts with personality is a store called Story, in Chelsea on 10th Ave. They curate their inventory every couple of months using a different theme. Everything from sustainably produced products, jewelry, books, accoutrements for cocktails, you name it…. you’ll find the quirkiest things there!
