Part 5: Express Yourself!
A long, long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away (also known as Massachusetts), I was a little decorator wannabe ! It was the 1970’s, and I grew up in a traditional New England colonial filled with Mahogany furniture and bathed in such colors as avocado green, harvest gold, orange and chocolate brown. I was so fortunate to have parents who allowed me express myself by designing my own room…it was a very modern Greg Brady/Rhoda Morgenstern departure from the other rooms in the house – orange wall to wall carpet, chocolate brown and chrome lacquer platform bed, armoire and dressers. The pièce de résistance may have been the walls: three papered in a brown, orange and white architectural pattern, with a showstopper hand painted geometric mural on one wall ! I loved this room ! It was a laboratory for the design years to come. I feel its extremely important to let your kids’ rooms truly speak of who they are !! That creativity and personal freedom will serve them well in the years to come. Let them go wild — paint and paper are inexpensive tools that can help them bloom into confident adults who can tackle the world.
