Introducing our new series, #Ones, in which we compile Important Things, as suggested by some of our favorite people — based on experience, observations, expertise…and the mistakes we have made (so you don’t have to). Up first, the Previously Owned by a Gay Man team suggests their style-making Must Haves for the home. (Stay tuned for #Ones: On the Road, coming soon.)
A Great Sofa
Often the focal point of your living space, the sofa is also the comfy spot to cozy up for a night of lounging (and binge-watching) — so finding that just-right balance between style and comfort is key.
Buy what you love, and hang it on the wall…hey, you’re an art collector! Original pieces — paintings, photography, sculpture, mixed media — from an up-and-coming artist can be surprisingly affordable, and each piece you choose marks a moment in your life.
High impact with uber-low investment — everything (and everyone) looks just a bit better in dim lighting.
The Right Rug
There are loads of rules about the proper size rug for a room, how to define areas or create harmony — we just think a great rug is like art for your floor, so choose one you really like. Bonus: feels great under bare feet.
Gold, copper, silver — a metallic accent feels fresh, and the polished shine of metal is always chic. Adds a luxe look to any room (think small – you’re not Donald Trump).
A beloved souvenir from travel, a meaningful family memento (heirloom quality, or not) — special objects create conversation pieces that are uniquely, and authentically, you.
The Danish term (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’…we checked!) means living simply — we think it’s all about simply living your life. How do you gather with family and friends? An intimate reading nook, or a dining room table large enough for a crowd? Embrace your Hygge, and fill your home with happy.
