Nestled in the central coast between San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles, just south of (but not to be confused with) Santa Barbara is the jewel that is Montecito. Between the salt air, the perfection of 75-degree days, and the stunning landscape (and, yes, the gorgeous homes!), there is really no place like it.
Extraordinary natural assets and epic views abound, yet nothing comes close to the beautiful Butterfly Beach across from the Four Seasons Biltmore. Locals and tourists alike flock to this picturesque spot and yet somehow it never seems crowded. Head to Coast Village Road where boutiques and restaurants are plentiful. The local go-to for classic American fare is Lucky’s — a bit pricey but always delicious. If you are hankering for a great piece of meat (or chicken or fish) and an excellent cocktail, this spot can’t be beat. A newer addition to the neighborhood is The Honor Bar. They don’t take reservations, which helps create a casual walk-in vibe. Their wine on tap is fabulous and the Emerald Kale salad is a signature.
For Home and Fashion, Montecito is a shoppers paradise. Coast Village Road is dotted with delightful boutiques. Two favorites are: Maison K — a perfectly edited selection of home accents, including classics such as Astier de Villatte, and unique items sourced from around the world — where you are sure to find something special. Angel (one of the Wendy Foster group of stores) has a terrific selection of casually elegant tee shirts, cashmere, and jewelry.
Venture to the Upper Village to shop a great mix of fresh newcomers and old favorites. Two musts: William Laman, and Upstairs at Pierre Lafond, polar opposites in their presentation, but both full of inspiration for the home.
If you have time to explore beyond Montecito, we found one of the best antique collectives we’ve ever seen in the charming beachside town of Summerland, just a few miles south — and Botanik is a great spot for some outdoor inspiration!
