A visit to Malena Lopez-Maggi’s studio is part fantastical geological discovery and natural wonders light show. Working in many mediums such as polymer clay, photography, film and installation, Lopez-Maggi makes work that references her environment. The forms she arrives at are often drawn from nature but merged with imagination to evoke a playful otherworldliness. With a great sense of color and passion for the tactile, Lopez-Maggi works both two- and three- dimensionally using both methods to influence the other. Her current body of work evokes the idea of a synthetic landscape, reflecting a contemporary human dilemma: The magnetic allure of highly fabricated objects versus concern for the environmental impact they may have. Malena Lopez-Maggi is an MFA candidate at Mills College, class of 2015.
