Are You Sitting Down?: The Art of the Chair
More than any other type of decorative art, the chair resembles the human form – reflecting the back, arms, legs and seat of our own bodies – could this explain our fascination? For centuries people have been experimenting with the idea of the chair, changing shapes, styles and materials; dressing them up or paring them down. It wasn’t until the 16th century that chairs became common to ordinary living, as in earlier times it was considered an “article of state and dignity”… no wonder I love a good throne!
Whether choosing a chair for comfort, utility – or simply for show – it is a furnishing piece to transform your spirit and your space. I may need a twelve-step program for my chair addiction! (I admit I am powerless to the allure of chairs…) There is great inspiration and satisfaction from discovering that perfect, sculptural chair for an interior design project, and the right chair can create a fully realized room. Below are a few examples of interesting chairs (in various price points) I have used to add character to homes of my clients.
